Photon Guidebook for HL Paper 3

Paper 3 is one long, unfamiliar problem that rewards a way of working more than a list of facts. This book teaches that way of working, from the first exploratory part of a question to the general result at the end.

Who it's for

Written for students who

  • AA HL and AI HL students who freeze on Paper 3 because the context is new every time.
  • Students who can do every topic on its own but struggle to keep a long investigation going.
  • Students in the final months before the exam who want complete papers to sit under timed conditions.

Beyond the topics

Chapters 16 and 17 are full practice papers, eight in all across AA HL and AI HL, each written for this book and supplied with a markscheme. Calculator instructions are given for the TI-Nspire CX II, followed by the Casio fx-CG50 equivalent.

Worked solutions to the practice questions are free on the publisher's site: HL Paper 3 (AA and AI) worked solutions.

How each chapter is built

The same four-part pattern runs through the book, so you always know where you are.

  1. How the question is builtEach chapter starts from our count of every real Paper 3 question of that kind since the 2021 specimen, and shows the usual arc: explore small cases, spot a pattern, conjecture, then justify or generalise.
  2. Teaching in short sectionsThe results and techniques an investigation of that type relies on, each with a marked example, plus GDC steps where the calculator helps you explore.
  3. Worked investigationsComplete investigations solved in three columns, with every mark explained, so you can see how credit builds through a long question.
  4. Graded practice and full papersPractice investigations from approachable to hard, then eight complete original papers across AA HL and AI HL, with markschemes.
